Understanding IP ratings

What do the different IP Ratings actually mean and which one do you need for your house numbers?

The IP Code or Rating provides a guideline to the degree of protection, provided by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures against, intrusion, dust, accidental contact, and water.

The first number has a scale of 0-6; it describes the level of protection the enclosure has against solid parts (such as fingers or wires), or on the higher end of the scale, against solid particles (such as dust).

The second number has a scale of 0-9; it describes the level of protection the enclosure has against water.

0 is the lowest level of protection and 9 (or 6 for the first digit) is the highest level.

So, what IP Rating do you need for your LED House Numbers?

Best IP Rating for LED House Numbers (or house front lights)

Any rating below IP44 is considered for indoor use. IP44 offers a certain level of protection against rain but should not be exposed to intense water. This is specified in the 2nd digit ‘4’, which means that it is protected against splashing water. The 1st digit, also ‘4’, specifies that the enclosure is not protected against particles less than 1mm in size, which includes dust, sand etc. This can reduce the longevity of the product, as any house front is exposed to dust from nearby roads or driveways.

As such we recommend selecting LED House Numbers that are IP65 rated, as this offers protection from ‘powerful water jets sprayed from any angle’; and is protected against dust particles entering the enclosure, which can cause damage to the components inside.
