How do Illuminated House Numbers work?

Backlit LED House Numbers

Illuminated House Numbers are such a wonderfully modern way to address your house, but how do they work?

You may see some products online that claim illumination or a ‘glow effect’ simply via reflective stickers. However, this is unlikely to achieve the look you desire. To illuminate the numbers, you of course need LEDs and electrical power.

For this, you may look to solar power initially; it’s energy efficient and doesn’t require any electrical wiring to install. Being LED House Number specialists, we’ve tested solar numbers on numerous occasions but are yet to find a solution that offers longevity. We’ve found that it’s better to invest in a quality product initially. Rather than having to buy a second product and drill more holes, a year or so later, to replace the house numbers, once the solar battery or connection has stopped working.

As such wired LED House Numbers are currently the best way to go. Although minor electrical wiring is required, it is no more than adding any other outdoor light, and as part of a renovation is just another element for your electrician to install.

Do I need an LED Driver?

Yes, wired LED house numbers require an LED Driver, to reduce the current to the correct level for the LEDs. This is normally 12V for small-medium sized numbers (7-15cm in height) but may be slightly higher for larger numbers or a full LED address sign (check the exact product specification when purchasing).

What are the switch options?

Light Sensor (Dusk to Dawn)

Dimmer / Remote control

The next thing to consider is how you’d like your House Numbers to turn on and off. Here you have 3 options:

Wall switch – like with any standard indoor or outdoor light.

Light Sensor – this is an automatic solution. Here the sensor will trigger the switch to turn the numbers on at dusk, then again trigger the switch to turn them off at dawn.

Remote control – a dimmer accessory can be installed so that you can turn your house numbers on and off via a remote control. You can also reduce the light intensity this way, adapting them perfectly to your illumination requirements.

Which you choose is entirely up to you. A Dusk to Dawn Light Sensor is a set-and-forget option, so you don’t have to remember to turn your house numbers on and off, saving electricity and time. A Dimmer/Remote control could be useful if you require specific or varying light intensity. If none of the above appeal to you, all you’ll need is the LED Driver to install your House Numbers.
